Formal Grammars for early child language

چکیده
This thesis develops a formal grammar for the two-word stage, one the earliest stages in the development of Dutch child language acquisition. The validity of this grammar is evaluated against the relevant parts of the Childes corpus. Some less formal observations about the earliest multi-word stage (the stage following the two-word stage) are formulated. ∗Written for the bachelor project AI 2008, bachelor Kunstmatige Intelligentie, Universiteit van Amsterdam †Supervisors: Remko Scha ([email protected]) and Jos de Bruin ([email protected])

Formal Grammars of Early Language
We propose to model the development of language by a series of formal grammars, accounting for the linguistic capacity of children at the very early stages of mastering language. This approach provides a testbed for evaluating theories of language acquisition, in particular with respect to the extent to which innate, language-specific mechanisms must be assumed. Specifically, we focus on a sing...
متن کاملThe production of lexical categories (VP) and functional categories (copula) at the initial stage of child L2 acquisition
This is a longitudinal case study of two Farsi-speaking children learning English: ‘Bernard’ and ‘Melissa’, who were 7;4 and 8;4 at the start of data collection. The research deals with the initial state and further development in the child second language (L2) acquisition of syntax regarding the presence or absence of copula as a functional category, as well as the role and degree of L1 influe...
متن کاملGrammatically-based Target-inconsistencies in Child Language
The continuity hypothesis states that early grammars are full-fledged UG-constrained grammatical systems, cast in the same mould as adult grammars and accessible to description and explanation through the same analytic tools. The fundamental validity of this hypothesis is confirmed by the results achieved by theory-guided acquisition studies over the last twenty years (see Guasti 2002 for a det...
متن کاملLambek Calculus and Formal Grammars
The question about the position of categorial grammars in the Chomsky hierarchy arose in late 1950s and early 1960s. In 1960 Bar-Hillel, Gaifman, and Shamir [1] proved that a formal language can be generated by some basic categorial grammar if and only if the language is context-free. They conjectured (see also [7]) that the same holds for Lambek grammars, i. e., for categorial grammars based o...
متن کاملBasic Classes of Grammars with Prohibition
A practical tool for natural language modeling and development of human-machine interaction is developed in the context of formal grammars and languages. A new type of formal grammars, called grammars with prohibition, is introduced. Grammars with prohibition provide more powerful tools for natural language generation and better describe processes of language learning than the conventional form...
